The minute you get that first positive pregnancy test or see that first ultrasound you instinctively start making goals and aspirations for your child. We want them to be athletic, musically inclined, intelligent, funny, independent, like us (or not at all like us), and the list goes on and on. All of these kinds of things could be very positive and healthy dreams for our children, Even if they are just dreams, it’s fun to envision what they will be like when they grow up.
I had/still have so many dreams and aspirations for Kate. But this week, all of that changed. This week those goals, while still attainable became a much smaller priority. Let me explain:
In the last week, Kate has managed to pull every DVD out of the bookshelves including the heavy special edition ones in those heavy tins. She pulled the entire XBOX out of the entertainment center and on top of her, pulled a nightstand bigger than her with her humidifier on top of it onto herself, and wiggled so much in the tub she face planted and swallowed enough water to scare the poop out of both of us.
Now, before you call Child Services these are not multiple counts of child neglect. In every one of these instances, I was standing right next to her (sometimes even with a hand on her) and able to come to her immediate rescue. This kid is so quick and so strong that she is unstoppable.
This brings me back to those goals. You know, the highly aspired athlete and musician ones I talked about earlier. This week, all of those goals were summed up into one goal.
My new, one and only goal for motherhood is just to keep this kid alive.
And let me tell you. She is going to give me a run for my money.
Seeing as how all of those scary things happened right under my nose, it humbles me to know that no matter how hard I try, I can’t control every circumstance and I can’t protect her from everything. God gives us each our own will, our own independence, our own ideas and ways of discovering this wonderful world around us. The same goes for our children. Therefore, we do our best to protect them but the best that we can do for them is to be in constant prayer. Pray continually for God’s protection and thank him daily for the protection he provided the day before, because I don’t know about you, but I definitely need the reinforcements.
