As I wrote this, Kate was now four months old and growing fast. This part of the journey is bitter-sweet in so many ways. Each time she grows I am sad because time is going so fast and I miss her being so small. But each new milestone brings excitement as she begins doing things that she didn’t do before. As she grows, she becomes more and more aware of her momma, and that makes my heart happy.
I’ve been blessed to have two days a week at home to spend time with her. I try not to plan a busy day if I can help it so I can put all of my time and energy toward her. If I do plan things, I usually regret it because I feel I didn’t get to see her very much.
Today on my day off, I attempted to do my bible reading while nursing. This is something I’ve been able to do since she was born. Since nursing takes a good amount of time, especially in the beginning, I would take my phone or Ipad and use that time to get my bible reading in. It actually worked out very well and I was able to keep up with my daily readings. But, as she has grown she has become a lot more active, a lot more distracted and needs a lot more attention while nursing. This usually means, my bible reading gets interrupted so that I can keep her focused, or burp her more often or whatever she needs. It has led to me giving up on using that time for bible reading. As a result, I often forget to do it at all and let days or even weeks go by before I get back to it.
Today, I was holding her in my arms, feeling guilty and defeated again for being behind in my reading, when she looked up at me with that bright-eyed toothless grin and smiled. With that smile, I felt the Lord speak to me. He told me that while reading His Word is important, I can worship Him through motherhood. Taking time out of my own agenda to love on my daughter is worship. Two verses came to mind.
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. (Colossians 3:17, ESV)
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. (Colossians 3:23, ESV)
I learned that even if we don’t get to our bible reading every day, we can worship the Lord by loving our children to the best of our abilities. And in those moments of showing love, we thank God for all that he has blessed us with. I can look at her and Thank Him for giving me a husband and a daughter to love, for giving her good health, for giving us both working eyes to see each others’ smiles. The list of gratitude is endless. So if you have days like this, be encouraged that the Lord sees you right where you are and will receive any form of worship you can give.
